New Year’s Eve Noon Balloon Drop: The Cultural Center at Ponte Vedra Beach will hold the annual New Year’s Eve Noon Balloon Drop from 11 a.m. to noon at the Center, 50 Executive Way, from A1A North, in Ponte Vedra Beach. Stop by for a bite of Brucci’s Pizza Pie or decorate a cookie a mile high. Snap, crackle and pop in the bubble-wrap room as you jump to the jingles of house band tunes. Create a hilarious hat with eyes that wiggle or make party masks that will make everyone giggle. Hundreds of balloons will be dropped at noon. Flagler College tours: The Hotel Ponce de Leon is a a national historical landmark famous for its Tiffany Windows, ornate murals and Spanish-Renaissance architecture. Tours depart at 10 and 11 a.m., and noon, 1, 2 and 3 p.m. daily through Jan. 2. The last tour departs at 1 p.m. on Dec. 31, Jan. 1, and Jan. 8-10. Tours will resume at only 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Jan. 11 and daily thereafter. Theatre and barbecue: Start the New Year right with lots of laughs and barbecue when Limelight Theatre presents a special presentation of Duck Hunter Shoots Angel - the hilarious story of two Southern hunters who believe they have shot down an angel! The St. Augustine Ghost Tour with A Ghostly Encounter

A Ghostly Encounter, a wonderful St. Augustine ghost tour, is fun, not too scary and very entertaining. You're sure to have a great time. Your tour will begin at the Spanish Military Hospital Museum, a certified haunted building. Hmmmm.... yep, it's true! A bit of St. Augustine history: It seems in 1821 the City had to replace several water lines located directly under the original Spanish Military Hospital building. Once the walls were torn down and the digging began, a possible explanation was found for the many documented statements by patients and employees reporting something “evil” and “frightening” that seemed to roam the ward. I don't want to spoil your tour so I won't tell you any more.

Upcoming events in St. Augustine

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Discover First America! program series returns to Flagler College Auditorium, located at 14 Granada St., beginning Dec. 7, 2011. The free, five-part entertainment series explores facets of St. Augustine’s rich history and culture, including food, dance, colorful costumes, shipwrecks, pirates, discovery, archaeological sites, Revolutionary War, and the military presence in St. Augustine for more than four-and-a–half centuries. The program is presented in celebration of the four-year St. Augustine 450th Commemoration. Each series will begin at 7 p.m. with the doors opening at 6 p.m. for seating, lobby displays, demonstrations and book signings.

“We are thrilled to bring this series of events back to the community,” said Dana Ste. Claire, development director for the St. Augustine 450th Commemoration.  “The first series was standing-room only, and we are excited to continue presenting information on St. Augustine’s history and culture.”

Pirates & Privateers of St. Augustine

On Dec. 7, 2011, Pat Croce, owner of the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum and celebrity adventurer, and Sam Turner, maritime archaeologist, will present this program.  Croce will speak about the journeys of the pirates of St. Augustine from Francis Drake to Robert Searle.  Turner will tell about 1500s life in St. Augustine and the nation’s oldest port based on recent historical and archaeological research.  This event is sponsored by the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum and the First Light Maritime Society.

First Colony

On Jan. 10, 2012, Kathleen Deagan, internationally acclaimed archaeologist, will report on her latest finds at the Fountain of Youth National Archaeological Park, which is located on the area settled by Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles in 1565.  Carl Halbirt, city archaeologist, will tell of his new discoveries, including a possible early wooden fort.  Menendez re-enactor Chad Light and his cast will recreate the historic landing in 1565, which will include a full entourage of Spanish soldiers, Timucuan Indians and Catholic priests.  This event is sponsored by the Fountain of Youth National Archaeological Park.

The Madness of King George

On Jan. 25, 2012, Roger Smith will recount the last days of the British reign in America, which took place in St. Augustine at the Pena-Peck House.  Smith will also talk about the rich colonial maritime history of St. Augustine.  John Stavely, author, tour guide and re-enactor, will appear as Jesse Fish, the persuasive British broker.  A colonial fashion show will conclude the program.  This event is sponsored by the First Light Maritime Society (St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum and the Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program) with support from the St. Augustine Maritime Heritage Foundation.

St. Augustine Tapestry

On Feb. 7, 2012, the lifeways, foods, songs and dance of the multiple cultures of St. Augustine will be presented, including the Menorcan, Greek and African cultures.  These cultures are important threads of St. Augustine’s tapestry.  Also, the secret colonial recipes for rum and Menorcan clam chowder will be revealed.  This event is sponsored by the Casa Monica Hotel.

To Arms!  Four & a Half Centuries of Military History in St. Augustine

On Feb. 16, 2012, the military presence from the beginning of St. Augustine will be depicted.  For centuries, St. Augustine has been shaped by wars, battles and military campaigns.  From the soldiers of Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles and the Fort Mose Militia to the Revolutionary, Seminole and Civil Wars, and finally the modern-day National Guard, 450 years of military history will be covered in 100 minutes through soldier re-enactors and vignettes.  This event is sponsored by the St. Augustine 450th Military Commemoration Committee of the St. Johns County Veterans Council.

British Night Watch Parade

In The City of Saint Augustine to be held on Saturday Evening, The 3rd of December 2011, 8 PM.

Starting at Government House, at West End of the Plaza, looping through Downtown St. Augustine to the City Gates, and returning to the Plaza.

Loyal Citizens are asked to Partake of this Merriment, bearing Candles or Lanterns to light their way, making merry with Good Company.  The Parade shall conclude at Government House with Muskets firing Volleys of Joy, and Christmas Caroling in the Plaza.

In early December of each year, historic St. Augustine celebrates its brief 18th Century British occupation during the annual British Nightwatch and Grande Illumination. 

The event draws thousands to the streets of Florida’s ancient city that is already aglow with millions of tiny white lights for its Nights of Lights celebration.

Parade Route Information

The Grande Illumination – British Night Watch Parade will begin at the Plaza, in front of Government House, at 8:00 PM. The Parade will leave St. George Street in front of Government House, heading south across King St. to march down St. George to turn left on Cadiz St. to march down to tune left on Aviles St. Then down Aviles St. back to King, around the Plaza to Cathedral, then right onto St. George Street. Marching down to left on Hypolita St., right onto Spanish St. down to Orange, where we turn right & march to the City Gates, were we march through and back down St. George Street back to Government House.

The BEST place to be for the parade if you are a spectator is in the Plaza, and plan to be in place around 7:30 PM to get a good spot. Once the parade gets started you may follow behind if you wish. The Tradition is to carry a candle or lantern as part of the parade. Candles will be available for a small donation.

Getting Married…and Other Fun Things to Do in St. Augustine

Happy Thursday LGs! Hope everyone is gearing up for the upcoming holiday travel season—today I’m heading out to California for Flavor! Napa Valley before heading home to Florida for a big turkey feast with my family. Keeping my fingers crossed that the weather is good, and the delays are minimal!

I wanted to take this opportunity to share the tremendously exciting news that one of the original LGs —Holly Corrbett—recently got married (Congrats!!) and the other—Jen Baggett—just got engaged! Wow!!! I’m so thrilled for both of my LG ladies, and look forward to more future travel with both of them….and their husbands.

As it turns out, Jen B has decided to get married in the ultra-charming little Floridian city of St. Augustine, which happens to be not just the oldest city in the US (founded in 1565), but the place where her formerly Maryland-based parents now live. She’s tapped me to be the maid of honor (aw!), and so we’re busy at work trying to plan a Lost Girls- worthy weekend adventure for all of her guests, and and exploring vacation rental homes in St. Augustine, so that her out-of-town guests will have a spacious and comfy place to sleep.

As it turns out, many of the guests are from New York City and New Jersey—where her fiance Kevin’s family is from—and have never been to St Augustine. Its a really cool town, with rustic cobblestone streets, historic sites (like the Fountain of Youth) and of course, beaches, and we wanted to make sure everyone had an idea of the best and most family-friendly things to do in St Augustine once they arrive.  Rather than doing a ton of reseasrch on our own (what, us research?) we snagged copy of this cool infographic, which sums it up rather nicely.

We recommend checking out St Augustine the next time you’re in Florida, or even booking long weekend in the area. Speaking from experience, its one of the few places in Jen and my home state where you can find a true mix of culture, adventure, natue and relaxation…and if you’re there the first weekend in June 2012, you can also find one very newlywed couple.

A visitor's guide to the World Golf Hall of Fame, St. Augustine, FL

Over the years golf has become one of the most popular sports. Many people regularly play the game themselves, as well as watch the professionals going about their business in the many tournaments that are held each season. Over the years there have been many golfers that have excelled in the game. If you want to find out about some of the stars that reached the very top of the game, a visit to the World Golf Hall of Fame is a way to do this. This museum celebrates the greats of the sport and whether you are golf fan or not it can be a great place to visit.

The World Golf Hall of Fame is currently located in St. Augustine in Florida and has a history that dates back to 1974. When it was originally established it was located in Pinehurst, North Carolina and run by a local board of directors. However it eventually came under the control of the Professional Golf Association of America (PGA) and moved to its present location in 1998. The Hall of Fame honors both male and female golfers and 13 golfers were inducted in the year of opening. Amongst these were some of the greats of the game including Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Same Snead, Gene Sarazen and Patty Berg. 

Each year the Hall of Fame holds an induction ceremony at which further golfing greats are admitted membership. Golfers from the PGA tour, LPGA tour and international tours are eligible for selection as long as the meet the minimum criteria required. The number granted membership each year varies, with between 2 and 8 generally being admitted. These are introduced at a ceremony held around May each year. From the original 13 players inducted in 1974, the membership has grown to more than 130.

The World Golf Hall of Fame is located at One World Golf Place in St Augustine, Florida and is open year round. The hours of operations are 10.00am to 6.00pm Monday to Saturday and 12.00pm to 6.00pm on Sunday. The cost of entry is $16.50 for adults, $14.50 for Seniors and students and $8 for children aged 5 to 12. The Hall of Fame has both permanent displays and a program of temporary exhibitions and some of the things you can view on a visit include the following.

Championship Moments Theatre

This is a short 10 minute film showing some of the greatest golfing moments over the years. This includes some of the best winning shots, iconic moments and dramatic endings in tournament golf. It includes the play of many of the members inducted into the Hall of Fame, with the likes of Nancy Lopez, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson being featured.

Each year a new group of golfers are admitted to the Hall of Fame and this exhibition shows details of their achievements and some of the significant golfing moments from their careers.

This is one of the central features in the World Golf Hall of Fame. It is an 88 foot long wall which features a brass plaque of each of the golfers inducted into the Hall of Fame with details of their careers and the wins they achieved.

Members Locker Room

This display has authentic golf lockers featuring memorabilia supplied by the golfers who have been inducted into the Hall of Fame. This is an ever changing display and shows little details and stories from some of the best golfers ever to play the game.

Walk of Champions

If you fancy a little fresh air, the Walk of Champions is the exhibit to view. It is a quarter of a mile walkway surrounding a lake which includes granite slabs with authentic signatures of the Hall of Fame members.

There is plenty to do and see and if you are a golfing fan it is sure to be an enjoyable experience. St. Augustine to be Featured in Two National Broadcast Programs

Located midway between Daytona Beach and Jacksonville, Florida's Historic Coast features historic St. Augustine and the place where Ponce de Leon first came ashore after his historic 1513 discovery of the land he named La Florida, an area whose boundaries included what would later become the eastern United States.

Our Nation's oldest city is becoming more and more popular with cruise travelers who sail from Jacksonville or who stop to visit the historic town (and shop in its expansive outlet malls) on their drive down I-95 to Port Canaveral. It's also become popular with national broadcast travel shows. In the past year, there have been at least six production crews that have visited St. Augustine to film nationally televised programs, both in English and Spanish. Two of them, HDNET's Drinking Made Easy and Univision's Despierta America!, will air this week.

The HDNet series Drinking Made Easy, features Zane Lamprey and his drinking buddy Steve McKenna as they travel the U.S. in search of the local drinks and drinking customs that have contributed to the birth, growth and distinction of our great country. In the episode to air tonight at 8pm, Zane visits St. Augustine and stops at several spots, including The Pirate Museum, where he downs grog with local pirates. Also featured are Salt Water Cowboys, Casa Monica's Cobalt Lounge (that's Casa Monica pictured above), and The Conch House.

Tomorrow morning at 10am, Despierta America, Univision's daily morning show, will feature correspondent Paola Gutierrez, touring the city and reporting about the "real" First Thanksgiving which took place in St. Augustine, Florida in 1565. Down With The Ship In St. Augustine

It is incorrect to dub St. Augustine, Florida as America’s oldest city. Native American mound cities in the Upper Midwest and the Anasazi Pueblo cities of southwestern Colorado predate St. Augustine by several hundred years, as do Mexico City and the ancient Mayan city of Tikal further south. However, St. Augustine was the first permanent, named European settlement in what is currently the United States, founded only a little over seventy years after Columbus’ historic voyage.

As you might expect, there is a lot in this area for the history buff, from the ruins of the original fort to the old town neighborhoods with colonial Spanish architecture and several museums. It was actually 1513 when explorer Ponce de Leon, then governor of what is now Puerto Rico, landed in the region, claiming it for King Ferdinand of Castile and Queen Isabella of Aragon as Spain was not an officially unified kingdom until 1516. Contrary to popular myth, he was not searching for a “Fountain of Youth” but more tangible goods such as gold, slaves and land. It was decades before a permanent settlement could be established.

ST. AUGUSTINE MARATHON WEEKEND

This is the first year for the marathon which promises to be a recurring holiday event. Where else can you participate in a full marathon, half marathon, 10K, 5K through the streets of the nation’s oldest city during the Nights of Lights. HISTORIC WEAPON FIRING DEMONSTRATIONS AT CASTILLO DE SAN MARCOS

Have a blast at St. Augustine’s Castillo de San Marcos when authentically-clad re-enactors demonstrate how Spain’s famed artillerymen fired their cannons in the 1740′s. The cannons will roar at 10:30 & 11:30 a.m., 1:30, 2:30 & 3:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 11:00 a.m., 1:30, 2:30, & 3:30 p.m. on Sundays. ST JOHNS COUNTY FESTIVAL OF TREES AT WORLD GOLFVILLAGE

THE GRANDE ILLUMINATION PARADE
