Flavors of Florida's Historic Coast Top Chef Cook-Off

More than a dozen chefs from restaurants along Florida's Historic Coast to compete Flavors Top Chef Cook-Off, A Benefit For Home Again St. Johns, Is This Friday!

Some of the top chefs from St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra & The Beaches will make culinary history when they compete at the Renaissance World Golf Resort, Convention Center and Beach Club for the title of Flavors Top Chef. The Flavors Top Chef Cook-Off is one of the featured events that take place during the Flavors of Florida's Historic Coast program which offers unique, delicious and affordably-priced prix fixe (fixed price) dining choices and enticing cultural events through the month of October.

Flavors of Florida's Historic Coast Top Chef Cook-Off will take place Friday, October 12 in the Atrium at the beautiful Renaissance World Golf Resort, Convention Center and Beach Club, from 5 to 7 p.m. The competition will feature more than a dozen chefs conjuring up their signature dishes for a panel of celebrity judges who will select the Best of the Best. In addition, everyone in attendance will sample the prix fixe dinners featured by Flavors participating restaurants in October. Ballots submitted by attendees will determine the Flavors People's Choice Award! Sponsored by the Renaissance World Golf Resort and The St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra & The Beaches Visitors and Convention Bureau, proceeds from the event will support Home Again St. Johns, the primary organization responsible for meeting the needs of the homeless in St. Johns County.

Historic Weapons Demonstrations At Fort Matanzas

Sunset Celebration At Vilano Beach Town Center

Big River at the Limelight Theatre

St. Augustine's Limelight Theatre brings the world of Huckleberry Finn to the stage in the multi-Tony Award-winning musical Big River.

Located at 11 Old Mission Avenue in St. Augustine, performances will take place through October 7 on Thursdays through Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. All tickets are $25 each. This Friday only, kick off the opening with a Hoedown beginning at 6 p.m. featuring tasty vittles, a DJ, dancing, wine and desserts. Huck Finn-inspired attire is encouraged. CANNON FIRING

CANNON FIRING DEMONSTRATIONS AT CASTILLO DE SAN MARCOS

Rangers and Garrison volunteers will demonstrate the weapons and relate the experiences of the colonial Spanish soldier of 1740s St. Augustine. 

Historic weapons demonstrations will be presented at 10:30, 11:30, 1:30, 2:30, & 3:30. Firing times are subject to change depending on weather conditions and staff availability.

Romanza

Celebrate St. Augustine, the oldest continuously-occupied city in the continental United States, with a full weekend of colorful entertainment. Weekend highlights include Saturday's Fire of Flamenco, featuring Tampa Bay Flamenco, in the courtyard of the Columbia Restaurant on Hypolita Street (free admission). 

Also free on Saturday is Romanza's Spain Bicentennial Parade and Celebration featuring hundreds of costumed participants, live Latin music, Spanish dancers and dignitaries. The parade and celebration take place on St. George Street and in the Plaza de la Constitucion. Romanza ends on Sunday with Latin Beauty and Music at the Fountain of Youth Park. 

This event features Latin bands, Hispanic folk dancers, and the Latin Beauty Queens. Admission is $8.

Head over to the Florida Agricultural Center to learn all about Florida Farming. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. enjoy historic demonstrators, food activists, re-enactors, organic growers, heritage livestock & poultry, trendy vendors, historic culture and music.

Guest speakers will address various farming and gardening topics. See traditional Florida come to life with canning, weaving, cast iron cooking, hand plowing contests, whip cracking, tractor contests and so much more! Admission is $8 for adults and $6 for children under 12.

Upcoming events in St. Augustine

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Discover First America! program series returns to Flagler College Auditorium, located at 14 Granada St., beginning Dec. 7, 2011. The free, five-part entertainment series explores facets of St. Augustine’s rich history and culture, including food, dance, colorful costumes, shipwrecks, pirates, discovery, archaeological sites, Revolutionary War, and the military presence in St. Augustine for more than four-and-a–half centuries. The program is presented in celebration of the four-year St. Augustine 450th Commemoration. Each series will begin at 7 p.m. with the doors opening at 6 p.m. for seating, lobby displays, demonstrations and book signings.

“We are thrilled to bring this series of events back to the community,” said Dana Ste. Claire, development director for the St. Augustine 450th Commemoration.  “The first series was standing-room only, and we are excited to continue presenting information on St. Augustine’s history and culture.”

Pirates & Privateers of St. Augustine

On Dec. 7, 2011, Pat Croce, owner of the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum and celebrity adventurer, and Sam Turner, maritime archaeologist, will present this program.  Croce will speak about the journeys of the pirates of St. Augustine from Francis Drake to Robert Searle.  Turner will tell about 1500s life in St. Augustine and the nation’s oldest port based on recent historical and archaeological research.  This event is sponsored by the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum and the First Light Maritime Society.

First Colony

On Jan. 10, 2012, Kathleen Deagan, internationally acclaimed archaeologist, will report on her latest finds at the Fountain of Youth National Archaeological Park, which is located on the area settled by Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles in 1565.  Carl Halbirt, city archaeologist, will tell of his new discoveries, including a possible early wooden fort.  Menendez re-enactor Chad Light and his cast will recreate the historic landing in 1565, which will include a full entourage of Spanish soldiers, Timucuan Indians and Catholic priests.  This event is sponsored by the Fountain of Youth National Archaeological Park.

The Madness of King George

On Jan. 25, 2012, Roger Smith will recount the last days of the British reign in America, which took place in St. Augustine at the Pena-Peck House.  Smith will also talk about the rich colonial maritime history of St. Augustine.  John Stavely, author, tour guide and re-enactor, will appear as Jesse Fish, the persuasive British broker.  A colonial fashion show will conclude the program.  This event is sponsored by the First Light Maritime Society (St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum and the Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program) with support from the St. Augustine Maritime Heritage Foundation.

St. Augustine Tapestry

On Feb. 7, 2012, the lifeways, foods, songs and dance of the multiple cultures of St. Augustine will be presented, including the Menorcan, Greek and African cultures.  These cultures are important threads of St. Augustine’s tapestry.  Also, the secret colonial recipes for rum and Menorcan clam chowder will be revealed.  This event is sponsored by the Casa Monica Hotel.

To Arms!  Four & a Half Centuries of Military History in St. Augustine

On Feb. 16, 2012, the military presence from the beginning of St. Augustine will be depicted.  For centuries, St. Augustine has been shaped by wars, battles and military campaigns.  From the soldiers of Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles and the Fort Mose Militia to the Revolutionary, Seminole and Civil Wars, and finally the modern-day National Guard, 450 years of military history will be covered in 100 minutes through soldier re-enactors and vignettes.  This event is sponsored by the St. Augustine 450th Military Commemoration Committee of the St. Johns County Veterans Council.

Down With The Ship In St. Augustine

It is incorrect to dub St. Augustine, Florida as America’s oldest city. Native American mound cities in the Upper Midwest and the Anasazi Pueblo cities of southwestern Colorado predate St. Augustine by several hundred years, as do Mexico City and the ancient Mayan city of Tikal further south. However, St. Augustine was the first permanent, named European settlement in what is currently the United States, founded only a little over seventy years after Columbus’ historic voyage.

As you might expect, there is a lot in this area for the history buff, from the ruins of the original fort to the old town neighborhoods with colonial Spanish architecture and several museums. It was actually 1513 when explorer Ponce de Leon, then governor of what is now Puerto Rico, landed in the region, claiming it for King Ferdinand of Castile and Queen Isabella of Aragon as Spain was not an officially unified kingdom until 1516. Holiday Season in St Augustine, Florida

There is now better place to celebrate the holiday season than St. Augustine, Florida. For the past five years, the bridge has been dark during the Nights of Lights due to a complete renovation and re-construction. This year, the bridge and the two new parks will be a welcomed addition to the holiday season. LIGHT- UP! NIGHT

Nov. 19, 2011 

Past Mayors of the city of St. Augustine meet in the historic Plaza de la Constitucion to “flip the switch” to light up the Nights of Lights celebration on Nov 19, 2011. The festivities begin at 4:00 p.m. with spirited holiday performances in the Plaza’s Gazebo. Then at 6:30 p.m., all attending this festive event will be asked to participate in the countdown to the lighting.

MAYOR’S HOLIDAY LIGHTING GALA

Nov. 19, 2011

You can be a part of St. Augustine Mayor Holiday Lighting Gala. The fun begins with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres at the Government House at 5:30pm. At 6:30 p.m., from the King’s Balcony, the Mayor will welcome the crowds in the Plaza de la Constitucion, for the Nights of Lights Lighting Ceremony. Following the Lighting Ceremony, the Mayor and Gala participants will be led by a 1740 Color Guard to the Courtyard of the historic Lightner Museum, located at 78 King Street, for dinner catered by Casa Monica Hotel, dancing to the music of The Committee and a silent auction. ST. AUGUSTINE MARATHON WEEKEND

This is the first year for the marathon which promises to be a recurring holiday event. Where else can you participate in a full marathon, half marathon, 10K, 5K through the streets of the nation’s oldest city during the Nights of Lights. Winners will get to drink from the Grail of Endurance filled with fresh spring water from the world famous Fountain of Youth.   

 On Saturday there will be a 10K run at 7 a.m.; a Family 5K Run at 7:15 a.m.; and the St. Augustine’s Kids Race at 9:30 a.m. Then on Sunday at 6:05 a.m., the St. Augustine Full Marathon & Half Marathon wheelchair participant starts and at 6:15 a.m. the St. Augustine Full Marathon & Half Marathon starts. Have a blast at St. Augustine’s Castillo de San Marcos when authentically-clad re-enactors demonstrate how Spain’s famed artillerymen fired their cannons in the 1740′s. Experience the Villa Zorayda Museum, beautifully decorated for the Holidays, during a special “Nights of Lights” Candlelight Tour. Our docent will lead by candlelight as you explore this gilded age house museum built by Franklin Smith in 1883 and view it’s astounding art and antique collection while learning of the Villa’s 127 year history. Refreshments of Christmas cookies & beverages start at 6:30 pm with the Candlelight Tour starting at 7 pm. Tickets are $15.00 for adults, children ages 7 -12 are $7.00. No charge for children ages 4 – 6. Tour is not recommended for children under the age of 3. Reservations suggested. Villa Zorayda Museum is located at 83 King Street.

44TH ANNUAL FALL ARTS & CRAFTS FESTIVAL

See art created from lace to limestone and crayons to crystal. Enjoy unplugged entertainment, plein air artists at work, and the Kids Art Zone. One of the region’s most prestigious juried art festivals, it takes place at Francis Field behind the St. Augustine Downtown Historic Parking Facility located on West Castillo Drive in St. Augustine. The festival is sponsored by the St. Augustine Art Association and is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is a $1 donation.

WINTER WONDERLAND

Winter Wonderland comes with lots of activities for both young and old. This is the only place where you can experience snow and ice. Winter Wonderland features a real ice skating rink, ice slide, Elf Express train rides, The Elf Village, sleigh rides and even real SNOW! There are also scheduled visits from Santa.

ST JOHNS COUNTY FESTIVAL OF TREES AT WORLD GOLFVILLAGE

December 2 – 11, 2011

The St. Johns County Convention Center and Renaissance World Golf Village Resort will showcase trees and wreaths decorated and donated by local businesses, organizations, families and friends from the community. The display will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the final day. Admission is free. The trees and wreathes will be part of a silent auction and visitors will also be encouraged to fill out a ballot indicating the number of votes (in minimum $1 bids) they would like to cast for their favorites. Proceeds will benefit the St. Augustine Record’s Empty Stocking Fund and the United Way of St. Johns County. The World Golf Village is located at Exit 323 off I-95 in St. Augustine. ST. AUGUSTINE BEACH SURF ILLUMINATION

THE GRANDE ILLUMINATION PARADE

March to the fifes and drums down the same St. Augustine streets marched through by British troops over 200 years ago. Then form up for the parade at 7:45 p.m. in front of Government House. The parade proper starts at 8:00 p.m. Saturday, December 3rd. Non-reenactors and other persons who wish to march along with the parade are invited to fall in behind the Civilians and Distaff. SUNSET/MOONRISE TOUR
